How Copeland scroll compressor works:
When compressed, one vortex disk remains stationary (fixed vortex disk) while the other vortex (rotating vortex disk) is allowed to move in a planetary motion (but not rotate) around the first disk. When this motion occurs, the space between the two disks is slowly pushed to the center of the two vortex disks, while the volume is reduced. When the space reaches the center of the vortex discs, the gas at high pressure is discharged through a channel located in the center. During the compression process, several chambers are compressed simultaneously, creating a very smooth process. The suction process (outer part of the vortex disc) and the exhaust process (inner part) are continuous.

Minimum operating time:
There is no definite answer as to how many times a scroll compressor can be started and stopped in one hour, as it depends heavily on the system configuration. Since scroll compressors are started under unloaded conditions, even at unbalanced pressures, there is no minimum stopping time. The most critical consideration is the minimum operating time after start-up that requires oil return to the compressor. The easiest way to determine this is to use a prototype machine with a glass sight glass (which Copeland can provide) while connecting the longest connection tube allowed by the system. The minimum run time is the time it takes for oil to be lost when the compressor is started and for the oil to return to the compressor sump until the normal oil level in the sight glass is restored. Cycling the compressor off and on at intervals shorter than this time, for example to maintain very precise temperature control, can result in a gradual loss of oil to the point of damaging the compressor.
